Sunsets by Ambleway is out on the App Store

Impulse Arc has released Sunsets by Ambleway, a free iPhone app that says whether tonight's sky is worth going outside for, and exactly when to be standing where.

Most evenings are not worth changing plans for, and the app says so. Open it and the screen is this evening, painted in the colors it is actually going to be, under a score out of five and a plain verdict: gray dusk, modest glow, worth a window seat, worth a hilltop, or cancel dinner. The score comes from how high the cloud deck sits, whether the western horizon is open enough for light to get underneath it, and how clean the air is.

The whole evening, not the moment

Sunset is a sequence rather than a time, and Sunsets gives it minute by minute: when to be in position, when the first color arrives in the west, when it peaks overhead, when the color drains back to the horizon, and when a headlamp will be wanted. Six evenings are available at once, so the good one can be picked out on Tuesday.

A map answers the same question across a region. Cloud banks are shaded by whether they block the light or catch it, the day and night line sits where it is at that moment, and every viewpoint carries the same five-rung score as the forecast.

Somewhere to stand

Where to watch from comes out of Ambleway's trail catalogue: short walks to a sunset perch, each carrying the time to leave, the distance and the climb, how long the walk back to the car takes, and whether the return will need a headlamp. Each walk is scored for how far it gets from roads and houses, and checked for a sight line from the perch back to the parking lot, for anyone who would rather keep the car in view.

Asked to, Sunsets sends one notification about 90 minutes before sunset, and only on evenings that beat the score you chose. Quiet weeks are the point.

Sunsets by Ambleway is free on the App Store, with no account and no advertising. The forecast works anywhere. Sunset walks are available where Ambleway's trail catalogue has been built, listed at ambleway.com/coverage.
